Natural stone, including granite, is porous to some degree. So if you have a granite countertop, then this might
allow liquids to penetrate the surface and leave a stain. To prevent that from happening you need to use a sealer.
So we will teach you all you need to know about sealing granite countertops.
You should realise that once a granite countertop has been sealed, the sealant can wear away, especially in
areas of heavy use. You will therefore need to seal your countertop on a regular basis. This can be done yourself
and the cost is quite reasonable.
Before attempting to seal a granite countertop it is very important that you clean the countertop. This can be
done using granite cleaner, which you can get from your local hardware store. All you need to do is spray the whole
granite surface with the cleaner and wipe it with a paper towel. Once you have done this you will need to give it a
few minutes to dry thoroughly.
You are now ready to seal your granite worktop. The sealer can be bought from your local hardware store. Granite
sealers are basically the same, but be sure to read and following the instructions on the bottle if they differ
from what you read here. It is best to buy a sealer that is in a spray bottle. If you can’t get one, then we
suggest you buy a spray bottle separately and pour the sealer contents into it, as this will make you job much
easier.
So now you spray the whole of you granite countertop with the sealer so that it is evenly coated. You may then
be tempted to clean this with a paper towel, but don’t - you will just remove the sealer from the surface. As
granite is porous, the way the sealer works is by being absorbed into the granite. So once you have sprayed the
granite sealer you will need to give it 20 minutes or so in order to absorb. If the countertop is still wet, then
you can clean off the excess liquid. Once you have done this, just let it dry completely for a few hours before
using it.
Granite countertops need to be resealed every 2-3 years. A quart of granite sealant should cost around $40 and
will be good for 100-200 square feet.
So, as you can see, sealing granite countertops is a very straightforward job. It’s also fairly cost effective
and will ensure that your countertop looks like new for many years to come.
